Campaign Information

Welcome to Carl & Peet's 49er Sailing Campaign Website.

We began this campaign in 2008 with the goal of competing in the 2012 Olympics. It has been both of our dreams to one day sail in the Olympics amongst the best in the world. There is no doubt that this adventure is going to be both challenging and rewarding. It is a long road to London in 2012 and we know we can not go it alone. We would like to thank everyone for their support in making this accomplishment possible.

12th in silver

While it was a tough event, we really pulled it all together on the last day. We consistently had good starts which we have been working on for a while now. Our boat speed and rig setup seemed pretty spot on allowing us to sail our own races and make some good tactical decisions. It's been a long season and we are very proud of the progress we've made in our campaign and we definately couldn't have done it without everyone's support! Saying thankyou does t do it justice but THANKYOU!!! See u soon

Day 4 Weymouth

Good day of sailing, 10-14 knts for first race picking up to 18 for race 2 and 3.  Good improvement today with 2 top 10s.  First race was going great proboly around 10-12. Until rounding the leeward mark the inside boat flipped over right in front of us or on us, putting their forstay 3 inches into the front of out wing, just finished up the repair.  After they flipped we managed to peel them off and keep going.  Not a fast mark rounding, we lost a few, but battle back to a 17th.  The next 2 races were much the same, breeze increased and the current was a big factor.  We had great starts and controlled which way we wanted to go.  Playing the right side for current relief, we made big gains.  We finished 8 and 9 to end the day.  One more day of racing, with same forcast for tomorrow, wind should be mid to high teens and if we are lucky a little sun.

Day 2 Blowout

Today was a waiting game. We were in the blue fleet which meant that we wouldn't start before 1pm. Yellow fleet was out and during their 2nd of 3 races it really picked up and the curent was against the wind which was really stacking up the waves. Meanwhile there is live commentary of the racing onshore by the BBC and their dialogue was absolutely hilarious the way they were trying to describe the power of the wind. So yellow fleet was sent ashore for postponement due to too much wind but we were all dressed and ready to head out so back to the changing room to wait. Around 430pm our postponement came down so we rigged up and could barely keep the boat on the dolly it was so windy. We launched, headed out of the marina, set the chute, and ripped all the way downwind to the harbor entrance. We took the chute down And turned upwind to a face full of whitecaps. We were getting waved back to shore and when we actually looked around it was a graveyard! So we took this opportunity to practice a few tacks before packing it in. Tomorrow is another day....

Day one Sail for Gold

The first day of racing started with 12-15 knts of breeze and overcast.  The wind was out of the southwest with big long shifts.  First race went well, we got on the right side of a huge shift on the downwind and gained huge.  After the first downwind we held our own and ended up 10th.  The next 2 races ended up the same.  Decent to good starts, the rest of the race was so so.  We made some good calls but also mist some shifts.  We broke even and ended up with 2 low 20s scores.  Right now we sit in 29th a few away from the top 25.  Not a bad first day, we got threw day one and we are still in it.  The next couple of days should be windy with a low pressure moving in.

Prep day

After 4 good days of training on the water today was our first day off to catch up on boat work and other items in preparation for racing which starts monday. We spent many hours on the race course doing practice races and more practice races focusing on many different aspects of the race. Yesterday was a very day blowing 16-25 know with decent wags out in the bay just outside of the breakwall. We were one of the few boats that went out yesterday and it was quite fun. What used to be survival conditions are now manageable and with more time and practice we'll be quite good. Racing starts Monday and we feel well prepared and anxious to put some good scores down!
